Hey Lykkers! We recently had the pleasure of visiting the breathtaking Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona.


From the towering cliffs to the dramatic desert landscape, every moment felt like an adventure, and we can't wait to share it with you!



1. The Majestic Vermilion Cliffs


One of the highlights of our trip was exploring the Vermilion Cliffs themselves. The striking red and orange sandstone cliffs are truly a sight to behold. As we hiked through the area, we were constantly amazed by the vivid colors that seemed to change as the sun moved across the sky. The cliffs are part of a protected area within the monument, which is open year-round for visitors to explore.


There's no entrance fee to the monument, which makes it a fantastic place to visit for anyone looking to experience the beauty of the desert. We spent hours hiking, taking in the scenery, and snapping photos of the stunning vistas. The Monument's access is free, but there are no facilities within the park, so be sure to pack plenty of water and food before you head out!



2. The Famous Wave


Another must-see attraction at Vermilion Cliffs is The Wave, a sandstone rock formation that draws visitors from all over the world. This iconic feature of the park is known for its undulating, wave-like ridges and vibrant colors, which make it one of the most photographed spots in the United States. We were lucky enough to secure permits to visit The Wave, which is required to protect the fragile environment. Only 20 permits are issued daily, and we recommend applying for them months in advance to increase your chances of visiting.


The Wave is only accessible by a strenuous hike of about 3 miles one way, but the effort is definitely worth it. The views are unparalleled, and the surreal landscape made every step feel like we were walking through an otherworldly place. The hike is challenging and should only be attempted by experienced hikers.



3. Practical Information: When to Visit and What to Bring?


The best time to visit Vermilion Cliffs is during the spring or fall when the temperatures are more moderate, as summers in Arizona can get extremely hot. We visited in the spring, and the weather was perfect for outdoor adventures. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be rocky and uneven. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.


There are no services within the Monument, so make sure to plan ahead for food and supplies. We also recommend checking the weather conditions before heading out, as monsoons can create flash floods, especially in areas like The Wave.


4. Where to Stay Near Vermilion Cliffs?


For accommodations, we stayed at the Best Western Plus Inn of Kanab, located about 30 minutes from the entrance to Vermilion Cliffs. The hotel offers comfortable rooms with modern amenities, and the location is perfect for exploring the surrounding natural beauty. Prices start at around $120 per night, making it a budget-friendly option for those wanting to stay close to the monument.


If you're looking for a more rustic experience, there are also campgrounds nearby, including the Paria River Campground, which offers sites for tents and RVs. Rates start at $20 per night for camping, and the views of the desert from the campsite are incredible.
