Hey Lykkers! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to wander through charming fishing villages that have remained untouched for centuries?
Well, we did just that on our recent trip to Sweden, where we explored the serene coastal villages, each with its own history and character. Ready to travel back in time with us? Let's dive into Sweden's maritime past!
We were captivated from the moment we arrived in the fishing village of Smögen. Located along Sweden's western coast, this village is renowned for its colorful wooden houses, scenic piers, and the fascinating maritime history. As we walked along the cobblestone streets, the fresh sea breeze mingled with the scent of saltwater, and we couldn't help but feel transported to another era. If you're ready for an adventure where time seems to slow down, Smögen should be at the top of your list.

The heart of Smögen's charm lies in its harbor, where the fishing boats bob gently in the water. We spent hours walking along the Smögen Pier, a historic wooden pier that extends into the sea. This bustling area offers a peek into the daily life of the village's fishermen, and you'll find plenty of seafood restaurants where you can taste the catch of the day. We recommend “Smögen Havsbad”, a seafood restaurant located right on the pier, offering a delightful selection of fresh fish dishes.
While strolling along the pier, we also visited the Smögen Museum (open from May to September, 10 AM to 5 PM), which offers a deeper understanding of the village's history, from its fishing heritage to its evolution into a tourist destination. Admission is just SEK 70 for adults, and it's well worth the price for the chance to learn about this coastal gem. If you're a history lover, the museum will give you insights into how this quaint village has preserved its traditions while embracing modern-day visitors.
Next, we traveled to Fjällbacka, another iconic fishing village that stole our hearts. Situated about an hour's drive from Smögen, this village offers stunning views of the Archipelago, with its rocky cliffs and tranquil waters. The village is famous for its crystal-clear waters and the stunning scenery that has attracted visitors for centuries. We took a boat trip around the islands, exploring the secluded coves and admiring the picturesque landscape.
A must-see activity in Fjällbacka is hiking up to Vetterhögen, a mountain peak that offers an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding archipelago. It's a relatively easy hike that takes about 30-45 minutes, and the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking. We visited in the summer when the weather was perfect for outdoor activities. It's free to hike, but be sure to bring sturdy shoes and some water for the journey.
While exploring Sweden's fishing villages is an incredible experience, there are a few practical tips to keep in mind. The best time to visit these villages is during the summer months (May to September), when the weather is warm, and all the attractions are open. During winter, many of the villages slow down, and some attractions may be closed.
Additionally, while public transport can get you to many of the coastal towns, we recommend renting a car to truly explore the more remote villages. This will give you the flexibility to stop at hidden gems along the way. If you plan on spending the night, we recommend staying at a cozy local inn or guesthouse. In Smögen, for example, you can book a stay at Smögen Havsbad Hotel, where rooms start at SEK 1,200 per night. This charming hotel offers a beautiful sea view and a relaxing atmosphere, perfect for winding down after a day of exploration.
For a truly unique experience, consider staying at Smögen Havsbad Hotel, located right on the edge of the sea. This coastal retreat is a great base for exploring both Smögen and the surrounding villages. The hotel offers rooms with stunning views of the sea, and you can even enjoy a relaxing spa treatment after a long day of sightseeing. Prices start at SEK 1,200 per night for a standard room. The hotel also has a restaurant that serves fresh, local seafood, making it an ideal spot to enjoy the region's culinary delights.
Exploring Sweden's old fishing villages was like stepping into a different world, where tradition and nature come together in perfect harmony. From the colorful houses of Smögen to the peaceful shores of Fjällbacka, we were constantly reminded of the beauty of simplicity and the charm of small coastal communities. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway surrounded by natural beauty and rich maritime history, these villages are the perfect destination. So, pack your bags and get ready to experience Sweden's coastal treasures!
